Coastal Light and Horizon: Paintings by Carol Keefe

Carol Keefe

I am inspired by the ever changing light and color at the horizon. My medium of choice is oil on board or canvas.

My paintings are often large, horizontal pieces emphasizing the meeting of sky and sea on Nantucket Island. My goal is to capture the feelings of summer on our coast.

I am a long-term artist member of the Artist Association of Nantucket (AAN).

I have had several Featured Artist shows there and won Best of Show in the AAN Gallery in 2007. I was honored with the 2014 Painting Award from the Artist Association of Nantucket.

My artistic training has been study at both the Decordova and Danforth Museum Schools. I have studied with Sherre Wilson Ray and Sandra Flavin. My work is in numerous private collections.

Creative Coastal Framing Ideas Using a Nautical Chart by Page Waterman Gallery & Framing in Natick, MA.

Creative Coastal Framing Ideas Using a Nautical Chart

When the Mat Becomes Part of the Artwork

One of the most creative aspects of custom framing is that the framing itself can become part of the visual story.

In this recent project at Page Waterman Gallery & Framing, a coastal painting by Trish Hurley was paired with a truly unique mat created from a nautical marine chart — transforming the framing into an extension of the artwork itself.

The result is a fresh, summery presentation that beautifully captures the feeling of Cape Cod and the islands.

Creative Coastal Framing Ideas Using a Nautical Chart by Page Waterman Gallery & Framing in Natick, MA.

A Nautical Chart Becomes Part of the Artwork

A Coastal Painting Inspired by Summer

The artwork featured in this project is “Under Changing Skies,” an acrylic painting on paper by Trish Hurley, measuring 9″ x 9″.

Filled with soft blues and greens, the scene evokes a peaceful summer day along the New England coast — with sand, beach grass, ocean water, and open sky creating a calm, refreshing atmosphere.

Like many of Trish Hurley’s paintings, the piece carries a strong sense of place while remaining open enough to remind viewers of many favorite coastal destinations across Cape Cod and the islands.

A Nautical Chart Used as the Mat

Rather than using a traditional solid-color mat, the team at Page Waterman selected a nautical marine chart and mounted it onto matboard.

The opening was then carefully cut by Page Waterman mat cutter Jeannie Celata, who thoughtfully arranged the chart so visible details include locations such as:

  • Chatham Harbor
  • Nantucket
  • Great Point

These map elements subtly reinforce the coastal feeling of the artwork while adding texture, character, and a sense of discovery.

The mat becomes more than a border — it becomes part of the storytelling.

Why the Light Wood Frame Works So Well

To complete the presentation, the artwork was framed in a light wood frame chosen to echo the tones of sand and shoreline.

According to gallery owner Sturdy Waterman, lighter natural wood frames often work especially well with coastal artwork because they reinforce the relaxed atmosphere associated with beaches, summer homes, and coastal interiors.

The finished result feels warm, airy, and unmistakably tied to the coast.

Custom Framing as Creative Collaboration

Projects like this are a reminder that custom framing is not simply about protecting artwork — it’s also about creating presentations that deepen emotional connection and reflect the personality of both the artwork and the owner.

At Page Waterman, many framing projects involve creative collaboration:

  • selecting unexpected materials
  • designing custom mats
  • choosing textures and finishes
  • creating presentations tailored to the artwork itself

The possibilities are nearly endless.

Modern Minimalist Framing Ideas That Let the Art Shine

Modern Framing Ideas for a Fresh Look

As part of our spring refresh here at Page Waterman Gallery & Framing, we’ve been exploring several new framing styles that offer a clean, modern look while allowing the artwork itself to take center stage.

In this video, Ryan Black, artist and custom framing expert, shares a few examples of recent projects that highlight minimalist framing techniques and creative ways to display artwork.

Thin Frames That Make a Big Impact

One of the framing styles Ryan highlights features a sleek line of thin-profile metal frames from Omega. These frames use a metal structure with a veneer finish, allowing for an ultra-thin profile that still provides strength and stability.

This approach is especially effective when paired with wide matting. The result is a refined, contemporary presentation that adds only the slightest edge around the artwork — creating a soft, elegant look that doesn’t compete with the piece itself.

Minimalist framing has become increasingly popular because it complements both contemporary and traditional artwork while keeping the overall presentation light and modern.

Floating Artwork for a Modern Presentation

Another example featured in the video includes oil paintings by Betty Ball, displayed using a floating-style presentation.

These pieces are mounted on linen backing and set deep within the frame using spacers. The result mimics the appearance of a traditional floater frame while maintaining a crisp, defined edge.

Because the artwork is mounted securely within the frame, glass is not required — allowing the texture and color of the paint surface to remain fully visible.

Floating artwork techniques like this create a sense of depth and visual interest while maintaining a clean, contemporary feel.

Why Framing Style Matters

The right frame does more than protect artwork — it shapes how the piece is experienced.

Minimalist framing styles can:

  • Create a clean, contemporary look
  • Highlight the artwork rather than overpower it
  • Work beautifully with wide matting
  • Add visual structure without heaviness
  • Complement both modern and traditional interiors

Whether you’re framing a painting, print, or cherished artwork, exploring different frame styles can dramatically change how the piece feels in your space.

Visit the Gallery to See These Designs

We invite you to visit Page Waterman Gallery & Framing in South Natick to see these modern framing styles in person.

Seeing the materials, proportions, and craftsmanship up close is the best way to understand how framing choices can transform artwork.

If you have artwork you’ve been thinking about framing — or simply want to explore new ideas — we’d be happy to help.

Also featured are a series of Cooper’s more meditative works — inspired by balanced stone forms often seen along hiking trails. These pieces offer a quieter, more contemplative perspective, while still carrying a strong visual presence. Displayed individually or as pairs, they bring both balance and interest to a space.

In addition, we’ve added a group of small oil-on-paper paintings in a 5″ x 7″ format. These smaller works are ideal for tabletops, bookshelves, or adding a thoughtful accent to a room — a simple way to introduce color and life after the winter months.

Together, these new arrivals reflect a shift in season and mood — from stillness to energy, from muted tones to color and light.

Explore Winslow Homer’s The Boston Common and The First Valentine, beautifully framed and available at Page Waterman Gallery & Framing in South Natick.

Winslow Homer’s Boston Common and The First Valentine — Now on View

Last fall, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston hosted a celebrated exhibit honoring Winslow Homer. Visitors may recognize The Boston Common, an illustration Homer created early in his career for Harper’s Weekly. The scene captures Beacon Street’s brownstones, the wind sweeping across the Common, and small details — a boy chasing his hat, dresses moving in the breeze — that bring 19th-century Boston to life.

We’re pleased to offer this framed illustration here at the gallery, thoughtfully presented and ready for display.

In addition, with Valentine’s Day approaching, we’re featuring The First Valentine, believed to be by Homer. This intimate domestic scene shows a young girl opening her Valentine while her family gathers nearby. The custom framing — including a red inner mat, cream linen outer mat, and gold frame — complements the warmth and charm of the piece.

Both works are available for purchase. We invite you to visit the gallery to experience them in person.
