Begin your journey through the 23rd annual Natick Artists Open Studios here at Page Waterman Gallery in South Natick. Meet two of our artist-framers…Jeannie Celata and Kerry Gorton Evans…who we love to regularly feature. And we’re delighted Liliana Glenn will be with us for this weekend event.

Jeannie Celata

One of my earliest memories is of an afternoon spent playing in the sunlight as it fell upon a quilt that my great grandmother had made. As I traced the designs, I marveled how the patterns and colors twisted around each other in harmony. The joy I felt that day is what I try to recapture each time I paint.

Primarily self-taught, the majority of my art education has come from working in galleries and frame shops. For over 20 years I have worked alongside dozens of artists of all ages and abilities with whom I have had countless discussions about technique, composition, materials, color and style. Many of the pieces of art we work on are the origin of these discussions. I am inspired and motivated by all the original and creative art that I see daily.

Currently living in Massachusetts with the support of my husband and two daughters, I try to paint every day. My paintings range from intimate still-lifes, to traditional landscapes, to sculptural abstracts. They can be found in private collections throughout the United States.

Kerry Gorton Evans

“I have been making paintings for as long as I can remember and have been a teacher of art to students of all ages for over three decades. I hold an ED.M from Harvard in Art Education and an MAT from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston/Tufts University. I have taught in public and private schools, museums and art centers throughout New England, including The DeCordova Museum, The Danforth Museum School, the Andover Public Schools, Beaver Country Day School and The Riverbend School. My work can be seen in exhibits and shows in and around the Boston area as well as around the country. I am also a registered yoga teacher and live in Medfield with my two teenage sons where I enjoy teaching yoga to adults, art to children, and painting the beautiful landscape that surrounds my home.”

“I wasn’t born with the gift of creating; I have cultivated and nourished it throughout my life while surrounded by patient, talented and beautiful teachers starting with my grandmothers. One of the great pleasures in my life has been sharing my knowledge, skills and the objects I create with my publics whose sense of wonder and enthusiasm fuel me enormously.

“Sometimes a design can take months or even years as I approach it not only from an esthetic standpoint but also that of wearability and comfort.”

Framing Travel Souvenirs: Turning Memories Into Something More

Sometimes the things we bring home from a special trip are small.

The memories attached to them are anything but.

A recent Page Waterman custom framing project began with three small souvenirs a customer brought home from a meaningful trip to Qatar. Rather than storing them away or simply placing them on a shelf, the customer wanted to create something that would preserve the experience and make those memories part of everyday life.

What followed became a wonderful example of just how creative custom framing can be.

Three Souvenirs—and a Story to Tell

The three architectural keepsakes represent distinctive places in Qatar, including the historic Barzan Towers and Al Zubarah Fort.

Each has its own character, but displaying the three together created an opportunity to tell a larger story.

We arranged the pieces side by side on a textured, sand-colored surface, visually connecting them to the desert landscape from which the memories came.

But we didn’t stop there.

Creating a Landscape for the Memories

Instead of using a conventional background, we invited Page Waterman artist Ryan Black to create an original painting specifically for the project.

Ryan painted a Doha desert scene on linen panel, with an expanse of desert beneath a blue sky, clouds, and a solitary bird overhead.

Placed behind the three souvenirs, the painting transforms the background into part of the experience.

The keepsakes no longer simply sit inside a display.

They inhabit a landscape.

The colors, textures, dimensional objects, and original artwork come together to evoke a sense of place—and help extend the memories associated with the customer’s journey.

Protecting What’s Inside

Creative presentation was only one part of the project.

The finished piece is enclosed within a custom clear acrylic display using museum-standard materials, including UV-filtering protection, with materials selected to resist scratching and static.

The result allows the three-dimensional pieces and painted landscape to remain fully visible while helping protect the objects within.

It’s an important part of exceptional custom framing: finding the balance between presentation and preservation.

Custom Framing Can Begin With an Idea

This project didn’t begin with a painting that needed a frame.

It began with three small objects and a question:

What could these become?

That’s one of our favorite parts of custom framing.

Travel souvenirs, family keepsakes, sports memorabilia, heirlooms, photographs, historic objects, textiles, collections, and other meaningful pieces can often become something far more personal when they’re thoughtfully displayed together.

Sometimes the solution is understated.

Sometimes it requires depth, unusual materials, or a custom-built display.

And sometimes, as with this Qatar project, the best solution involves creating an original work of art to complete the story.

What Would You Frame?

Take a look around your home—or perhaps inside the drawer, box, or closet where you’ve been carefully keeping something for years.

There may be an object that immediately brings you back to a trip, a person, an accomplishment, or a particular moment in your life.

It doesn’t have to be conventional artwork to deserve a place on the wall.

Roger Barron

Some artists have a wonderful ability to capture not only a place, but the feeling of being there.

Roger Barron (1938–2017) was one of them.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Barron became a longtime Boston antiques dealer as well as an accomplished painter. He traveled extensively throughout New England, sketching and painting en plein air and finding inspiration along the coastline, in marshes and dunes, beside harbors, and in the people who gathered there.

He became particularly known for colorful, impressionistic oil paintings of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, and Maine. His figural beach scenes were also especially treasured, and Barron was a member of the North Shore Art Association in Gloucester.

Today, his paintings are receiving renewed attention—and it’s easy to understand why.

Celebrating a Beloved South Natick Landmark

For generations, the South Natick Falls have been one of our community’s most recognizable and beloved landmarks.

Just across the street from Page Waterman Gallery & Framing, the falls, bridge, and surrounding landscape have welcomed walkers, painters, photographers, wedding parties, and visitors who simply pause for a few moments to enjoy the beauty of the Charles River.

As the waterfall begins a new chapter with the planned removal of the dam, we wanted to celebrate this remarkable place through the eyes of the artists who have painted it over the years.

Every artist sees something different.

Some are drawn to the rushing water as it spills over the dam. Others focus on the changing seasons, the reflections on the Charles, or the quiet character of the historic bridge. Together, these paintings preserve not only a familiar landscape, but also the memories and emotions that so many people associate with South Natick.

Each painting captures a unique perspective of this iconic location—its changing light, flowing water, historic architecture, and enduring sense of place.

Whether you’ve crossed the bridge countless times, stopped to admire the falls, or simply appreciate New England landscapes, we invite you to experience this special collection.

We hope these paintings remind us that while landscapes may evolve, the places that shape our communities continue to live on through the artists who record them and the memories we carry.

My paintings are often large, horizontal pieces emphasizing the meeting of sky and sea on Nantucket Island. My goal is to capture the feelings of summer on our coast.

I am a long-term artist member of the Artist Association of Nantucket (AAN).

I have had several Featured Artist shows there and won Best of Show in the AAN Gallery in 2007. I was honored with the 2014 Painting Award from the Artist Association of Nantucket.

My artistic training has been study at both the Decordova and Danforth Museum Schools. I have studied with Sherre Wilson Ray and Sandra Flavin. My work is in numerous private collections.

Creative Coastal Framing Ideas Using a Nautical Chart

When the Mat Becomes Part of the Artwork

One of the most creative aspects of custom framing is that the framing itself can become part of the visual story.

In this recent project at Page Waterman Gallery & Framing, a coastal painting by Trish Hurley was paired with a truly unique mat created from a nautical marine chart — transforming the framing into an extension of the artwork itself.

The result is a fresh, summery presentation that beautifully captures the feeling of Cape Cod and the islands.

A Coastal Painting Inspired by Summer

The artwork featured in this project is “Under Changing Skies,” an acrylic painting on paper by Trish Hurley, measuring 9″ x 9″.

Filled with soft blues and greens, the scene evokes a peaceful summer day along the New England coast — with sand, beach grass, ocean water, and open sky creating a calm, refreshing atmosphere.

Like many of Trish Hurley’s paintings, the piece carries a strong sense of place while remaining open enough to remind viewers of many favorite coastal destinations across Cape Cod and the islands.

A Nautical Chart Used as the Mat

Rather than using a traditional solid-color mat, the team at Page Waterman selected a nautical marine chart and mounted it onto matboard.

The opening was then carefully cut by Page Waterman mat cutter Jeannie Celata, who thoughtfully arranged the chart so visible details include locations such as:

Chatham Harbor
Nantucket
Great Point

These map elements subtly reinforce the coastal feeling of the artwork while adding texture, character, and a sense of discovery.

The mat becomes more than a border — it becomes part of the storytelling.

Why the Light Wood Frame Works So Well

To complete the presentation, the artwork was framed in a light wood frame chosen to echo the tones of sand and shoreline.

According to gallery owner Sturdy Waterman, lighter natural wood frames often work especially well with coastal artwork because they reinforce the relaxed atmosphere associated with beaches, summer homes, and coastal interiors.

The finished result feels warm, airy, and unmistakably tied to the coast.

Projects like this are a reminder that custom framing is not simply about protecting artwork — it’s also about creating presentations that deepen emotional connection and reflect the personality of both the artwork and the owner.

We’re delighted to welcome back ceramic artist Amy Drury Sullivan for a second special show at Page Waterman Gallery & Framing.

Following the warm response to her first show last fall, Amy returns this spring with another beautiful collection of handcrafted ceramics — thoughtfully made pieces that balance artistry, texture, form, and everyday usefulness.

Amy’s work reflects a lifelong connection to the arts and to craftsmanship rooted in home, family, and tradition.

Raised in Lowell, Massachusetts, Amy grew up surrounded by creativity — from painting and sketching to pottery and printmaking. She later earned a degree in painting and printmaking from the University of Maine before eventually turning her artistic attention toward quilting and ceramics.

Her work is deeply influenced by texture, pattern, and the quiet beauty of handmade objects meant to be lived with and passed down through generations.

That same sensibility carries through her ceramics: pieces that feel both artistic and deeply personal.

A Thoughtful Spring Collection

This spring show will feature a fresh collection of Amy’s ceramic work, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the craftsmanship, warmth, and individuality that have made her work so admired.

Whether displayed on a shelf, used at the table, or given as a meaningful gift, these handcrafted pieces bring beauty and character into everyday life.

Celebrate Spring with a Special Pop-Up Art Show

Spring is a season of color, renewal, and small moments of beauty — and we’re celebrating it with a special Spring Pop-Up Art Show featuring pastel paintings by Kerry Gorton Evans, one of our own artist-framers here at Page Waterman Gallery & Framing.

Join us for this chance to discover a delightful collection of small pastel works that capture the charm and energy of the season.

These pastel paintings and watercolors are intentionally small in scale — most measuring 4″ x 4″, with several at 6″ x 6″ — yet each piece captures a vivid glimpse of springtime beauty.

Subjects include blossoms, flowers, birds, and golden light — all familiar signs that winter has passed and warmer days are ahead.

Kerry Gorton Evans has been making paintings for as long as she can remember and has taught art to students of all ages for more than three decades.

She holds an Ed.M. from Harvard University in Art Education and an MAT from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University. Over the years, she has taught in public and private schools, museums, and art centers throughout New England.

Kerry’s work has been exhibited throughout the Boston area and across the country. She lives in Medfield, Massachusetts, where she continues to paint and teach, drawing inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds her. As both an artist and framer at Page Waterman, Kerry brings a unique perspective to her work — combining artistic vision with framing expertise.
